Represented by the United University Professions (UUP), the State University Professional Services Negotiating Unit is comprised of faculty and non-teaching professional staff within the State University system.

The NYS/UUP Joint Labor Management Committees offer funding and grants for training and education to State University employees.
Lifeguards were transferred to the PSNU from the Security Services Unit (SSU) on January 29, 2009, but continue to be covered under the 1999-2003 NYSCOPBA agreement which expired March 31, 2003. Lifeguards are employed on a seasonal and temporary part-time basis primarily for the NYS Office of Parks, Historic Preservation, and Recreational Services.
